Madrid – Foster #1029

090213T016 Madrid is an 11-week old Boxer mix puppy that we have in foster care. His urethra got nicked when he was neutered and has to have a catheter for a few days until it heals properly. He’s only going to be here for a few days. On Saturday he goes back to the Shelter to have the catheter out, and since he’s already been adopted, he ought to be able to go home.

The hardest part about taking care of him is that he has to be confined to a kennel so he won’t pull out the catheter. It’s held in with sutures, but he can step on the tube or bite it and pull it out.

Harriett rigged up a harness and belly band to hold the tubing when he’s taken outside to poop. The tube is covered in VetWrap (the red and yellow stuff in the photo) so it won’t twist and kink as he moves around. The tube is held in place by the harness and band. It come from his sheath and runs along his chest under the harness so he will not step on it. Harriett puts the collection bag in a sack and carries it with her when she takes him outside.

When he’s in the house he has to be kept in his kennel because of the tube. We raised his kennel up on a platform so the collection bag will be low enough to maintain drainage without a possibility of the urine backing up the tube.

If he poops in the kennel we have to clean everything up so he won’t get any infections. There’s a cleaning procedure we do a few times a day as well.
