It’s been a long night.
Gertie had been showing signs of going into labor for the last few days. On Wednesday she started nesting, a sign that birth is imminent.
It wasn’t too far into our PuppyCam broadcast on Wednesday evening that Harriett, who had been sitting with Gertie by the whelping box, let me know that Gertie was having contractions. I excused myself from the online chat and went downstairs. I arrived to find the first puppy had been born. It was obvious she had been through this before.
We thought we saw six puppies on the x-rays, but by 1:00am it was obvious that Gertie was finished. There had been no contractions for about 2 and a half hours and she curled up to go to sleep. I consulted with the veterinarian (sorry, Rebecca!) and we decided that since she was clearly not in distress we would wait and see what happened.
The simplest explanation is that we misinterpreted the x-ray. When I look very closely this morning I can clearly make out five spines, but the sixth is “iffy.” I think we misread the films. This morning we’ll check in with the vet again and decide what to do.
Gertie and the pups are doing great this morning. All five are very active. We will have better pictures to post later today.
