Kids Say The Darndest Things

Picture 113

We got another update from Kim about the three pups from our litter that are with her for foster care. As a bit of background, Kim was at a conference on Saturday with Harriett and I. One of the speakers was talking about training shelter dogs to make them more adoptable. Two of the tricks they teach are called “Pray for the Pitties” and “Wave Hi.” Here’s Kim’s story (the Tom in her story is her Husband):

After the conference last night, I was talking to Tom about some of the cool things we learned. I mentioned the “pray for the pitties” and “wave hi” in their cages. I got home from Orpheum and Doogie had busted out of the room, (knocked down a gate and jumped the other-had it 2 gates high) and had a blast with our bulk toilet paper rolls. Lets just say I was mad and it looked like it had snowed down there. So I am cleaning it up and Ava asks for my treat bag. She proceeds to shape the puppies to  jump through a hoop. I watched quietly and took some pics and video for us for fun. When I asked her why, she told me, “Doogie needs a job to be happy and maybe it will help them get adopted, like the waving.” SO COOL. I am so proud of her. And she has all 3 puppies jumping through a hoop when told within 15 minutes.

Ava’s about six years old.

Ava is so smart! If only more dog owners could have her good sense. She and the pups are adorable together.

    Could you describe the tricks?

  3. "Pray for the Pitties" is having the dog put their front paws on a box and then put their head on thier feet. It looks like the dog is praying.

"Wave Hi" is just lifting one foot. This is just like "Give Me Your Paw".
