Turns out that Max's femur had been broken for pretty much his whole life and his owner wasn't doing anything about it. This is a very difficult bone to break. It wouldn't happen by jumping off the couch, for example. A dog doesn't usually get a broken femur unless it's hit by a car or gets hit by something pretty big.
When Max's owner found out how much it would cost to fix the leg he told the vet he couldn't afford it and took Max home. Ultimately, Animal Control managed to get the owner to relinquish Max and the vet's office undertook the surgery. A few volunteers came together to raise money to cover the expenses. The surgery involved resetting the partially-healed leg, putting in a pin, and covering the whole thing with a rigid splint. Max needed 2 weeks of cage rest before the splint could be removed. That's when we got involved. We had just returned a litter of pups to CCHS so Max moved in.
