Sam Update

091220T011

Sam’s been here for two days and he’s fitting right in. Here he is with Russell, the latest addition to our Base Pack. Sam likes Russell and can often be seen sitting or laying on him. It’s hard to tell from this picture whether the feeling is mutual.

Sam has turned out to be a normally-active, 5-month old Lab/Lab mix puppy. He loves human contact! It’s been hard to get a good photo of Sam. As soon as I get down on the floor for a shot he runs over and sits on my lap.

As you may expect from a Lab or Spaniel mix, Sam can be very active. The good thing is that he pretty much sticks to playing with the many dog toys that are in the house and doesn’t get himself into trouble very often. He’s crate trained and quiets down in just a few minutes at bedtime. We’ve been pleased to find that he’s mostly housebroken. With a little training and attention he’s going to be a very nice addition to someone’s family.

We’re starting to do some basic training with Sam, something we’re pretty sure was lacking in his original home. For now we’re working on “sit” and not jumping on us. We’re using the clicker and food treats. He’s been a pretty fast learner and is making progress very quickly.

The plan is for Sam to be neutered on Thursday. He will spend Christmas Day with us and then go back to the Shelter on Saturday to be available for adoption.
